Our research is focused on the characterisation and manipulation of dielectric surfaces and molecular nanostructures on dielectric surfaces. The main experimental method employed is dynamic scanning force microscopy operated in the non-contact mode (NC-AFM). Structural characterisation at the atomic scale is complemented by exploring surface electronic properties with metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES).   >>>

  The Summer School offers both, an introduction into NC-AFM and related techniques (EFM, KPFM and MFM) as well as in-depth presentations on topics in advanced NC-AFM imaging and spectroscopy. The target audience are students and young researchers, and the aim is to bring together newcomers with experts for extensive discussions in a relaxing atmosphere. Post-docs and senior researchers entering the field or seeking for an expansion of their knowledge are equally welcome. >>>

    Jeppe Lauritsen from the iNANO (Aarhus Univeristy, Denmark) and Michael Reichling published the first comprehensive review on oxide surface physics performed with non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) in the ultra-high vacuum. The review article introduces the NC-AFM technique, provides a comprehensive overview of respective studies, describes work on Al2O3(0001), TiO2(110), ZnO(1000) and CeO2(111) in detail and the authors develop a perspective on future NC-AFM applications in the framework of oxide studies.

10.12.2008   Aiming at a spin quantum computer
    We received funding for a project entitled "spin quantum computing based on endohedral fullerenes with integrated single-spin read-out via nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond". The project is a cooperation between three research groups and will be funded for an initial period of three years by the VolkswagenStiftung in the framework of their program "integration of molecular components in functional macroscopic systems".   >>>
