Beschreibung
General relativity is the theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein in 1916. It is the current description of gravitation in modern physics and generalizes Special Relativity and Newton's law of universal gravitation, providing a unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time, or spacetime. In particular, the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the energy and momentum of whatever matter and radiation are present.
This course aims to introduce in the basic concepts and methods of General Relativity. The physics of black holes is frequently used to illustrate the physical consequences of the theory.
Syllabus:
The Equivalence principle
Tensor algebra and analysis
Riemannian geometry
Particle motion and fields in flat spacetime
Gravitation as spacetime curvature
Motion in curved spacetime
Einsteins field equations
Experimental tests of General Relativity
Black Holes
Gravitational waves
Some familiarity with Special Relativity will helpful but is not strictly necessary to follow the course.
